Govan has a rich tradition when it comes to republican flute bands, throughout the years there have been many bands that have came and went whilst building a proud legacy for this part of glasgow as being at the forefront of republicanism through the bands. From as early as the 1980's govan has enjoyed the presence of at least 1 band at any given time and at the height of the conflict in the north sustained 2 flute bands through the James Connolly RFB and the Govan Shamrock FB. The landscape of republicanism has changed a great deal over the years and so has that of the flute bands which represent it, in todays age there are many different splinters of republicanism, much to the detriment of the bands in which there are restrictions to what parade or event bands can take part in. We believe that these tactics will only prove to have a lasting effect to the existence of our bands and indeed that of our movement as in years gone by divide and conquer tactics have been used by many oppressive cancers of society in order to crush the spirits of freedom loving people. We aim to unite these flute bands and stand side by side in this important stage of struggle, we are faced with more and more barriers everyday to try and halt our existence therefor now more than ever we have to show strength and unity in the face of yet another breed of oppression. It was therefor agreed that govan should once again stand up and rally to the need of unity and the Govan Republican Flute Band has been established by a group of former bandsmen to help pave the road to unifying flute bands in scotland and ireland, strength in numbers will always be a weapon that these systems cannot quash and we call to all republican flute bands and indeed all like minded republicans to stand with us regardless of any political belief and lets help get our message out and our streets filled with music and colour once again.
